2017 Tournament

As the game that used to be held every Fall has moved to June, participating players feel nervous. Hosting the game for 15 years, Woo Jeong Hills (par 71, yard 7328) golf club boasts that the change is dense yet detailed battle to distinguish best players. 1st round was monodrama for Kim Jun Sung(26). He gradually lowered the number of strokes by hitting birdies on 2nd, 3rd, and 5th, hole. On 7th hole(221 yard, par 3), he grabs the fortune of achieving hole-in-one with number 5 iron. It was the first hole-in-one acquired in regular tour after making a debut to the pro world. On the most challenging 9th hole, he added a birdie, reducing 6 strokes only in the first half. He added birdie on the 12th hole, but a bogey on the par 3 13th hole(230 yard) was a little flaw. Later on, he set the record of 8 under par 63 strokes course record tie by making birdies on the 16th hole(255 yard, par 3) and the last hole. It is the same record that was set by Lee Chang Woo in 2016 2nd round and Rickie Fowler in 2011 3rd round. His Jae Mool Po high school alumni Kim Gi Hwan(26) was placed in the 2nd place with the record of 6 under par and 65 strokes by making 8 birdies and 2 bogeys.

The 2nd round was a race for Kim Gi Whan who hit an eagle, 2 birdies, and 1 bogey making the record of 3 under par 68 strokes. Setting the intermediate sum of 9 under par 133 strokes, Kim Gi Whan beat up 2nd place Kim Jun sung with the difference of 1 stroke and took over the leaderboard's top position. After hitting a birdie on the 1st hole, his 2nd shot with number 6 iron on 2nd hole(par 4, yard 424) made an eagle shot on 180 yard distance. Although he hit his first bogey on 10th hole(par 4 yard 431), he finished the round with birdie on 18th hole(par 5 yard 570). Kim Gi Whan was self-confident despite the fact that he won 'Deok Chun' Award(Award given by KPGA to Korean players who record average minimum par) twice in 2012 and 2015 without any victory. Kim Jun Sung, who achieved course record tie on the previous day, finished the game as even par with 4 birdies and bogeys.

There was no change in the rank on the 3rd round 'Moving Day'. Kim Gi Whan, who hit 1 over par, is 2 hit ahead of the 2nd place tie group with intermediate sum 8 under par 205 strokes. In the beginning, he made a mistake of hitting 3 successive bogeys from 2nd to 4th hole. However, he did not falter and changed the mood by hitting birdie on the 5th hole(par 5 yard 543). Moving through the 2nd half, he reduced one more hit by making tee shot after hanging the ball 2 meters from the 13th hole(par 3). He hit bogey on the 17th hole(par 4 yard 494), but on the last 18th hole(par 5) he made up for his mistake with birdie, not giving up hope for first victory in his career. Park In Kwon(31) and Choi Min Chul(29), who earned qualification for the competition through the qualifying match, and 'One Asia Tour' new rookie Chang Yi Keun(24) formed 2nd place tie group(6 under par 207 strokes). However, fierce veterans caught up forecasting intense final. Park Sang Hyun(34) lowered 3 strokes, raising his rank to 5th place tie(5 under par 208 strokes). While 'unknown' players who have no experience of victory are in the leading group, Kang Kyung Nam(34) the 'adventurer' with KPGA 9 victories and long hitter Hur In Hoi also caught up as 11th place tie with 4 strokes difference(4 under par 209 strokes).

On the final round, Chang Yi Keun hit 5 birdies, 2 bogeys, and 1 double bogey making the score of 1 under par 71 strokes. On 14th hole, where he was leading 1 stroke, he earned double bogey due to the mistake he incurred from his chip shot and, on the 15th hole he missed short par putt making it apparent that he will fail to earn the championship title. However, he managed to revive by hitting 3 successive birdies from 16th to 18th holes. Chang Yi Keun, who scored final sum of 7 under par 277 strokes, tied with Kim GI Whan who lost 1 stroke and won after 3-hole extension time match. In this extension match, while Chang Yi Keun scored par-birdie-bogey, Kim Gi Whan hit par-bogey-double bogey making Chang Yi Keun run away with 3 stroke. On the 17th hole, the chip shot that Chang Yi Keun made 20 meters from the 'green' was the cause of the victory. Kim Gi Whan, who is leading 2 strokes in the final round, made a mistake of hitting double bogeys with 4 putts on the 5th hole and later on, from 8th to 10th hole, missed 1meter short par putts consecutively, which resulted in his break down with 3 consecutive bogeys. However, he showed his fighting spirit of leading the match to extension by hitting a birdie on the 12th hole and birdies on the 17th and 18th hole in a row. Kim Gi Whan missed the chance to become the winner and remained in the second place, garnering qualification for the participation in the 'The Open' and prize of 120 million won. Hur In Hoi(30), who climbed up to the 1 stroke leading position as he hit only 4 birdies up to 14th hole, was not able to join the extension because he missed the 80 centimeter par putt on the 18th hole. Choi Jin Ho(33, who became the 1st place in the prize sector after winning the SK Telecom Open, hit daily best 6 under par 65 strokes and finished the match as 3rd place tie(6 under par 278 strokes) with Hur In Hoi. Park Sang Hyun ended up in 5th place, hitting 4 under par 280 strokes. This day witnessed 7 players climbing up to the leading position, unfolding unusual best match of intensiveness and liveliness
